📅 The 12 Islamic Hijri Months & Virtues

Explore the 12 sacred months of the lunar Hijri calendar and their spiritual virtues in Islam.

1st Month

1. Muharram (محرم)

Sacred month. Fasting on Day of Ashura (10th Muharram) expiates the sins of the preceding year.

2nd Month

2. Safar (صفر)

Second month of the Hijri calendar, associated with reflection and gratitude.

3rd Month

3. Rabi' al-Awwal (ربيع الأول)

Month of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), bringing light to the universe.

4th Month

4. Rabi' al-Thani (ربيع الثاني)

Fourth month of the Hijri calendar.

5th Month

5. Jumada al-Ula (جمادى الأولى)

Fifth month of the Hijri calendar.

6th Month

6. Jumada al-Thaniyah (جمادى الثانية)

Sixth month of the Hijri calendar.

7th Month

7. Rajab (رجب)

One of the four sacred months. Contains the blessed Night of Isra and Mi'raj.

8th Month

8. Sha'ban (شعبان)

Month preceding Ramadan. Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) fasted frequently during Sha'ban.

9th Month

9. Ramadan (رمضان)

The holiest month of obligatory fasting, Quran revelation, and Laylatul Qadr (Night of Power).

10th Month

10. Shawwal (شوال)

Begins with Eid al-Fitr (1st Shawwal). Fasting 6 days of Shawwal brings reward of fasting whole year.

11th Month

11. Dhu al-Qi'dah (ذو القعدة)

One of the four sacred months in which fighting was historically prohibited.

12th Month

12. Dhu al-Hijjah (ذو الحجة)

Sacred month of Hajj pilgrimage, Day of Arafah, and Eid al-Adha (10th Dhu al-Hijjah).
